The ECM Gran Crema bottomless portafilter makes visible what happens under the basket during extraction. It is therefore primarily a tool for assessing distribution, tamping, and channeling - not simply an accessory that automatically produces more crema.

Without a spout, you can see directly whether the espresso exits the basket evenly or whether individual areas break through noticeably earlier. This can be especially helpful when dialing in new beans, as it allows you to identify puck-preparation errors more quickly.

ECM supplies the bottomless version with a 21 g basket. Nevertheless, compatibility with your brew group is decisive; with different or older machines, fit should be checked before purchase.

The bottomless portafilter is right for you if you want to analyze your espresso workflow and reproduce it more consistently. For a straightforward everyday shot without the risk of splashing, a traditional spouted portafilter remains more convenient.
