Two espresso cups weigh: Linea Mini R with double spout

La Marzocco Linea Mini R Weiß mit Connected Scale – Brew by Weight Bundle
Products from this article

Two espresso cups sit under the dual spout of your La Marzocco Linea Mini R. But what does the set target weight mean when the scale detects only one cup? This question matters: the value for a single portion and the total yield of the shot are different quantities.

Distinguishing total yield from the individual portion

If your recipe is intended to produce 36 grams of espresso from a total of 18 grams of coffee, the 36 grams refers to the entire beverage from the portafilter. With an even split, that would theoretically be 18 grams per cup. However, the two spouts do not guarantee that the distribution will be exactly even in every shot.

If only one cup is on the scale, only its weight is measured. You cannot reliably determine the contents of the second cup from this measurement alone. Uneven flow in particular can otherwise result in unexpected portions.

Three possible setups

Setup What the measurement indicates
One shared vessel The entire espresso is weighed; you can then divide it.
Both cups together on a suitable weighing surface The total is recorded, provided everything rests freely and fully on the surface.
Only one cup on the scale Only this portion is measured; the total yield remains unknown.

A mat or extension must not be improvised so that it rests sideways on the machine. You must check before use whether an accessory is suitable for the scale model. A large board resting on two fixed points can distort the weight measurement.

For a controlled recipe comparison

If you first want to dial in your espresso recipe, a shared vessel is often easier to evaluate. You can see the full yield and compare it with the amount of coffee. Only once the flavor is right is it worth optimizing the process for two individual cups.

Also observe the distribution at the dual spout. Clean the accessories according to their instructions and keep the preparation consistent. An apparently suitable total does not yet mean that both people received the same portion.

Automatic stopping requires the right measurement target

With Brew by Weight, the set target value should match what the scale actually measures. So do not blindly start with your usual double recipe if you have changed the position or number of cups being weighed.

Can I simply tare two cups together?

Only if the setup is suitable for this, both cups rest freely, and the entire load is supported by the weighing surface. Also check the manufacturer's dimensions and load limits.

With a Linea Mini R and Connected Scale, you can create a consistent workflow. When planning, information about your cups and your preferred portafilter can help us.
