The Subminimal Subscale combines a dosing cup and digital scale in a single tool, eliminating an entire step when weighing coffee. Beans are added directly to the cup, weighed there, and then poured into a grinder or hand grinder without transferring them. This is just as practical for espresso as it is for V60, AeroPress, or other filter recipes. The minimalist black design conceals the LED display in the housing, making it visible only when activated.
The integrated scale measures in 0.1-gram increments and displays up to 99.9 grams. The cup itself holds approximately 60 grams of coffee beans or around 120 milliliters of liquid. This provides enough capacity for typical single-dose recipes as well as larger filter portions. Grams and ounces can be switched directly on the device.
The Subscale is made of BPA-free Tritan and is protected against splashing water in accordance with IPX4. It can therefore be rinsed off easily after dosing and, according to the manufacturer, is also suitable for hot liquids up to 100 °C. The integrated 400-mAh battery is charged via USB-C, and an automatic shutoff reduces unnecessary power consumption. Weighing only around 122 grams, the cup remains light enough to be useful in a travel setup.
The biggest advantage is not complex barista modes, but a streamlined workflow: weigh, grind, and continue brewing without needing a separate scale just for beans. For measuring brew water, flow rate, or espresso yield, a traditional flat scale such as the Varia AKU is still more suitable. As a dosing cup with a built-in scale, however, the Subscale saves space and extra steps. It is therefore particularly well suited to single-dose grinders, hand grinders, and users who want to keep their espresso or filter workflow as clean as possible.
